WHAT'S ALL THIS PROPAGANDA?

The role of Propaganda in support of the Fascist Italian regime cannot be understated. While Propaganda took many forms (with a wide variety of creative imagery) two imaginings of Italy took precedence in influencing the development of the architectural style characteristic to Fascist Italy.

ITALY AS
ROME'S SUCCESSOR
ITALY AS A
TECHNOLOGICAL SUPERPOWER

It is not uncommon in European history for Rome to be invoked in support of a nation or culture (see Holy Roman Empire). Following the first World War, criticisms mounted against the standing democratic government for its lack of assertion. Out of this was born a political movement which favored action over the democratic process, decision over debate. This movement stirred the pot for the development of the fascist party and was one contributor toward Mussolini's eventual March on Rome.

The beginnings of such symbolism worked to ignite a regime, but the spectacle did not end there. Claiming to be its spiritual successor, Invocations of Rome also worked to incur a spirit of nationalism and patriotism within the masses, one that recalled the ingenuity and assertiveness of Roman civilization and sought to apply such to the Italy of today.

"The Rome that we honor . . . is not nostalgic contemplation of the past, but hard preparation for the future.

Rome is our departure and reference point: it is our symbol or, if you wish, our Myth. We dream of Roman Italy, i.e. wise and strong, disciplined, and imperial."

-Benito Mussolini

At the conclusion of the first World War, the Italian economy fell into somewhat of a depression. Industries, inflated by the war effort proved to be too developed to economically serve a peacetime population. As such, many factories and facilities fell into disuse. Banks, being the primary support of such industry, took a hard hit. The resulting economic depression was too much for the then-reigning Italian Democracy to handle.

Mussolini's regime played a significant role as economic benefactor to the once-struggling Italian economy.

With the regime came financial support for reconstruction, new infrastructure, new industry, and new technology.

Certain ancient Roman symbolism, such as the Fasces (a bundle of rods accompanied by an axe) were adapted as nationalist symbols of cultural and societal justice, force, and unity. Called the Fascio Littorio (pictured below), it was a prominent symbol on many propaganda pieces and sometimes even on architecture (see the Bolzano Victory Monument).

Mussolini held the spectacle created in the production of propaganda in such high esteem as to call it artistry. That being said, it is important to note that the form of such art had no government-regimented style. Mussolini preferred an organic spectacle, a self-generating mythos to develop and characterize the regime. As such, those designers, artists, and architects working under him had free-stylistic reign.

While the world struggles to find work, the Italian economy is booming: Housing reconstruction, new public edifices, clean water, bridges, railways (significant due to Italy's lack of natural coal resources), and airplanes (which were themselves symbols of a new era; Mussolini even took flying lessons to cash-in on the stardom associated with pilots)!

As was apparent, Italy was beginning to modernize and this would be seen expressed in its new architecture.

The wisdom and assertiveness of Rome would come to be expressed primarily in the monumental character of the works of Marcello Piacentini

"At a certain moment the artist creates with inspiration, the politician with decision. Both work the material and the spirit. . . . In order to give wise laws to a people it is also necessary to be something of an Artist."
